I started my Wiki trail with the Cheddar Man. I have been seeing him all over the news this week and upon seeing him on the class Twitter, I wanted to learn more. Cheddar Man is a human fossil that was found in 1903 in England. He is in the news a lot this week because upon sequencing his DNA they learned something that scientists had not expected. Cheddar Man had blue eyes and dark to black skin. He is also related to 10% of England's population! They also learned he was lactose intolerant. This lead me to my next Wikipedia article.

Lactose intolerance is a condition that causes people to get sick when they eat dairy products. This is because their bodies can not properly digest the sugar (lactose) in milk products. One thing I learned in this article is that it is genetic and that 88% of the Beja population in Sudan is lactose intolerant. This lead me to my next search, Beja people.

The Beja people are an ethnic group that live in Sudan, Eritrea and parts of Egypt. They are a group of pastoral nomads and speak Beja, which is their native tongue. They are a group of over 1.2 million. They were also researched by Rudyard Kipling.

Rudyard Kipling was an English writer that lived from 1865 to 1936. I was really surprised to learn that he wrote The Jungle Book. I had no idea. He was also the winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature.
Hey Blake! It's crazy how Wikipedia trails can take you so far between subjects, it's easy to get lost in them! I hadn't heard yet about the Cheddar Man, but that is really interesting that he is one of Britain's oldest skeletons and was found to have dark skin. This comes at such an interesting time in our society too, it's important for people to remember their background is not so cut and dry, but that humanity has been shaping itself and changing and growing so much throughout history!
