Growth Mindset: The Sleeper

For this Growth Mindset challenge, I watched The Sleeper, which is a video by a professor at Kansas State. In the video, the professor talks about how he is easily influenced by the reactions of his students when teaching and how he always noticed one student who was always sleeping and who he could not seem to reach with his lectures. One day, he asked the student out to lunch to get to know a little more about him and learned that he is very passionate about video games and playing and creating them. Because of this knowledge, the professor was able to create a learning environment that actually engaged the student and fostered learning instead of the traditional lecture.

I think this story is a great lesson for a couple of reasons. The first of these is that everyone learns differently and it is important to find the best way for one's students to learn. This is kind of like the multiple intelligences that I covered in another Growth Mindset post. What works for one student may not engage another.

Another lesson from this video is that you never know what is going on in people's live outside of the classroom. Instead of growing angry at the student and disciplining him for sleeping in class, the professor chose to get to know the student and more about their life before jumping to conclusions.
